“RETIRED BACHELOR’S RETREAT.”
Tired of hectic life in Metro Manila, our client is looking to retire in his hometown of Puerto Princesa in Palawan. The modern industrial house has a very unassuming facade, per the request of our client, a veteran banker.
The lot faces west, so the decision to close the facade is both an aesthetic and a practical choice.
All that you can see from the roadside is this brick wall, painted white, in keeping with the industrial vibe. Transom windows run across its length, providing natural light to the interior while filtering out the heat. It also gives privacy as requested by the client.
The front door is clad in the same material as the eaves, a sustainable mix of recycled plastic and wood to give it continuity and guide the eyes so the facade is worth a second, or even third look.
WHITE BRICK FACADE
Although much of the facade consists of a brick wall, once you’re through the front door, you’re faced with a foyer where the client can hang one of the paintings from his burgeoning collection. Past the foyer, the bachelor’s pad opens up to the rest of the L-shaped house. The longer wing is where the kitchen, dining room, and living room are all located in an open plan. The shorter wing, on the other hand, contains a short hallway, where he can display more of his paintings, and this leads to the master’s quarters with the master’s bedroom, bathroom, and a library.
Increase volume by having a sloped ceiling
The sloped ceiling, made up of the same wood-plastic composite panels as the front door, gives the house an added volume. Additionally, the stark white interiors make the space seem larger than its 95 square meter area.
As Puerto Princesa is a city known for its fresh air, one wall of the dining area has floor to ceiling sliding doors. If the client is so inclined, he can open this up into the lanai, which also doubles as a poolside dining area.
MASTER’S QUARTERS AND BOOK LOVER’S HAVEN
The master's bedroom also has these sliding doors which open up to a deck on the short side of the pool where the client can have his breakfast bathed in the gentle morning sun. .
Another added feature of the home is the library, since the client is an avid reader. Full-length shelves along the walls provide plenty of storage for his book collection. An air conditioning unit installed ensures he is both comfortable and keeps his books safe.
