“Everyday Feels Like a vacation.”
This is the overarching theme for this project located at Ayala Greenfield, Calamba, Laguna. The client, an avid golfer, mentioned that the golf course is what really sold her the lot. But more than that, the community’s location, less than an hour’s drive from Metro Manila, at the foothills of the majestic Mt. Makiling, the lowlands of Laguna spread before it, holds lots of potential.
Modern tropical architecture style fits well with the vacation vibe that the client is going for, but they also wanted curves. Modernism is all about clean and solid lines, so it is a challenge to fit the curves into the concept. After a bit of back and forth with the client, we were able to come up with this façade. There are no edges that can be seen, and even the pillars holding the roof are round.
Fluted wood-plastic composite (WPC) panels and greenery adorn the façade to complete the modern tropical look. Even the main door is clad in the same WPC panels to match the rest of the façade.
We really love it when the project pushes the boundaries of our design, and that above is not the only challenge we had to overcome.
The lot faces west, which is the most exposed to the harsh afternoon sun. Coincidentally, it also has the best view in the property. The question now is how to balance having the view and at the same time keep the interiors cool and comfortable. We thought of using WPC panels as brise soleil. Coming from the French word for “sun breaker”, it is an element that controls the heat and light that enters a building. GARPE designed a custom track for the WPC brise soleil so our client has the option of keeping it open in the mornings to enjoy the view with a cup of coffee in the privacy of their balcony, and then close it in the afternoons when the heat of the sun is at its peak.
Furthermore, the dining area completely opens to the lanai, and by extension the pool, by way of customized slide-and-pivot doors for a complete indoor-outdoor experience. In keeping with the tropical sukabumi tiles were used in the pool, reminiscent of a Balinese resort.
The client’s mother, whom she evidently loves in the way she talks about her, will be living with her in the house, so Team GARPE located her room in the upper ground floor. She has her own private deck and poolside access, with sliding doors facing east to let the gentle morning sunlight in.
Climbing the stairs to the second floor, there is the TV Hall, but it is the hallway on the left side which leads to the master’s quarters, that catches the eye.
Did you know that Funko Pops can also be used to spruce up your home’s interior?
Our client recently started collecting Funko Pops, and before she knew it, her collection had ballooned to hundreds! In line with our vision of thoughtful architecture, we designed a Funko Pop hallway to showcase her colorful collection so that she will be able to always enjoy it every time she makes her way to her bedroom.
